Playing Ogg files In WMP

Do you want to begin playing ogg files in WMP, this short guide will show you how to do this.

Have you ever recieved the error message:

This is because there is no supporting codec for the file to use to be able to play in Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player supports some codecs natively but other need plugins to work. You will want to download the Vorbis Codec from the official site:

Vorbis Download Link

Once you have done this download the setup file and install the program. You should now be able to succesfully start playing ogg files in WMP, if it does not you will need to do some advanced editing, this is not for the unexperienced. This editing I am going to show you could easily go wrong if you don't do it correctly and it could easily mess up Windows settings. If you don't want to attempt it perhaps consult a friend or support person to do it for you.

For those of you who wish to try it, you will want to go to the Registry Editor, to get there go to the start menu and go to run, type hereregedit. Once you have loaded up this window go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, create a new subkey called .ogg and then select HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.ogg. In the right pane on your window double click the entry called 'Default' and set the data to mp3file. Now double click on 'content type'and enter 'audio/x-ogg' as its data.

Create a new REG_SZ value PerceivedType and then double click this entry and set its data to audio
