So you are doing a lot of CD copying to your PC, however you may want to Change Rip Music CD Settings because either your device does not support the file format you are copying files to, or the file size is too big.

Windows Media Player offers a lot of different options to copy with:

  • Windows Media Audio
  • Windows Media Audio Pro
  • Windows Media Audio (Variable Bit rate)
  • Windows Media Audio Lossless
  • MP3
  • WAV
  • Many of these files formats such as Windows Media Audio Pro just aren't supported by many companies such as Creative and iRiver. Most Plays for sure devices (the main Windows Media Player supported format) support WMA (Windows Media Audio) and MP3.

However for those of you wishing to make backup copies of CD's you may want to encode these files in a high bit rate, however you must be aware that the higher the bit rate the larger the file, so make sure you decide just what you want more. If you want more songs be sure to go for a lower bit rate.

This is the current view we see when loading up the Rip Tab

There are a variety of different options available to you, we will take each one in turn starting with where you save your music. Obviously once you stick your CD into the disk drive of your computer Windows Media Player will need to know where to save it.

The default location tends to be:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Music

Of course you may wish to change this to something like:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Music\musicforcd

To do this we simply click onto the Rip Tab, to do this we go to Tools then Options and then click Rip.

Once on here you will notice at the top of the screen is a box which says 'Rip Music to this location', in that box is a button called 'Change'. Click this and then use the dropdown menus to locate the folder you wish to place the music into.

Next step in how to change Rip Music CD settings I will show you how to change the file format, file formats plays a big part in whether or not it plays on your MP3 player. Make sure you consult the user guide for your MP3 player, most likely if anything it will accept MP3 format which is a universal non restricted file format used by all the big names such as Apple and Creative.

Simply follow the instructions and then choose which file format suits your needs. To change the format, use the same tab as you did for changing the file location only this time look a bit further down, you will see a big box saying 'Rip Settings' underneath this title you will a dropdown menu click it and all the options will appear.

Choose the option your MP3 player supports and click it. Now you have learned how to Change Rip Music CD Settings in Windows Media Player, be sure to try it and perhaps show it to your non techie friends that you can do this, it will impress them no end that you can change rip music CD settings
